Note to Stop-Lossed Veterans

Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars need your help.

Every servicemember who was stop-lossed between September 11, 2001 and October 1, 2008 is now eligible for some well-deserved back pay. Under legislation I supported last year, anyone -- active duty or reserves -- who was stop-lossed is now eligible for $500 for every month served in stop-loss status.

But here's the catch: You need to apply for this benefit by October 21. That's just four weeks away.

If you are eligible -- or know someone who might be eligible -- for this additional stop loss pay, please check out the Defense Department's website for more details:

According to the Defense Department, the average benefit is $3,800, and there are over 145,000 eligible service members and veterans. Unfortunately, only 58,000 claims have been paid. That means we all need to do more to help get the word out.

Post this information at your Armory, your VFW or Legion hall, and your VA facilities. Let's make sure the folks who were stop-lossed know we're thankful for their service and we're proud to provide them with this benefit that they've earned.

Thanks again for your service to our country and for looking out for your fellow veteran. Shining a spotlight on issues like this and solving problems for our veterans is an important part of my work for Montana in the U.S. Senate. I can't do it without your input. Be in touch.
