SPONSORING SECTION(S): Administrative Law and Criminal Sections and Military Law Committee

TITLE OF CLE: Military Veterans and Service Members in the Minnesota Criminal Justice System

DESCRIPTION: Are you representing a veteran or service member in the Minnesota criminal justice system?  If you are what are the unique challenges they face?  What tools are available for you in helping your client?

Attorney John Baker, who is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and is Chair of the MSBA Military Law Committee, and attorney Sharon Clark-Williams will be discussing what those unique challenges are and will give you the tools to help your client.   This 2 hour seminar will help you understand what combat stress issues are including: post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.  It will also help you properly identify your client as a veteran and understand military documents and lingo.  There will also be a discussion about the impact of collateral consequences of certain criminal charges on active duty and reserve service members.  Judge Charles Porter, retired Navy Captain and the presiding judge for the first Veterans Court in Minnesota, will share a review of the Veterans Court one year after its creation.

September at Hamline

posted Sep 9, 2011, 7:54 AM by Hamline Law Veterans Association   [ updated Sep 9, 2011, 7:57 AM ]

The Veterans Advocacy Committee is planning a couple of activities next week that we hope you will participate in.  The first is an information table in the Giddens Learning Center lobby in the morning on Monday September 12th.  Feel free to stop by between classes and pick up information on Hamline’s veterans programs or speak to members of the Veterans Advocacy Committee.

The second is a barbeque that will be held on that afternoon from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Hedgeman lawn (by Hedgeman Center, Hewitt Avenue).  The inclement weather location will be Sorin A/B.  If you are planning to attend, please reply to this message by noon Friday Sep 9th, so we can get the right amount of food.  Hope to see as many Hamline students veterans there as possible.

You are probably also aware that this Sunday is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  While I’m sure we will be discussing the topic at the barbeque, there is no formal commemoration planned.  Hamline’s Wesley Center, however, is organizing the following activities.  Thanks to Nancy Victorin-Vangerud, Hamline Chaplain and member of the Veterans Advocacy Committee, for providing this information.

Reflections on September 11th Ten Years After, at noon in the Bush Student Center Chapel, led by  Megan Dimond, Coordinator of Religious and Spiritual Life Programs, Rola Alkatout, Student Co-leader of Multi-faith Student Alliance, Rev. Nancy Victorin-Vangerud, University Chaplain. All are welcome!  Contact mdimond01@hamline.edu, ralkatout01@hamline.edu

Volunteer Opportunity with Minnesotans Standing Together: Remembering, Healing, Hope  September 11th Ten Years After
Students can volunteer for this public ceremony at the State Capital Mall, organized by the Minnesota Council of Churches in collaboration with other community groups    Meet 1:45 at the Bishop, following the Reflections in the Chapel.  For more information see http://www.minnesotansstandingtogether.com/    If you want to volunteer, contact mdimond01@hamline.edu, ralkatout01@hamline.edu

Video Viewing for Reflection on September 11th, BSC HUB, 7pm-9pm
We will be viewing the video made by Valarie Kaur, who spoke at Hamline two years ago, entitled, Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath.  Kaur was a 20 year old college student when after Sept 11th she set out across the country with her cousin, Sonny, to document hate violence against her Sikh community.  From Ground Zero to the desert towns of the American west, her journey confronted the forces unleashed in a time of national crisis--racism and religion, fear and forgiveness--until she found the heart of America--halfway around the world.  And where have we traveled since then?  Viewing and discussion led by Chaplain Nancy Victorin-Vangerud.  Contact nvictorinvangerud01@hamline.edu.
